About Network Mentoring Programs

Network Mentoring Programs is a structured program out of the Office of the Dean of Faculties (DOF). Junior and senior faculty from a variety of backgrounds and ethnicities are paired as mentee/mentor. Pairs commit to meet throughout the semester to provide junior faculty with quality guidance to assist them in building successful careers at Texas A&M University. The DOF office funds one lunch per semester, per pair, and encourages pairs to meet on a regular basis to work toward goals developed together at the initial meeting to ensure success for junior faculty and, hopefully, satisfaction for senior faculty in knowing they played an important role in that success.

Mentees can expect mentors to get to know them as individuals and offer confidential guidance in areas of interest and concern. Mentors should take a genuine interest in their mentee’s academic progress, familiarize them with TAMU policies, and offer honest appraisal of their scholarship if asked.

In turn, mentors can expect mentees to, above all else, ask when they need help or when information is unclear. Mentees should use thoughtful consideration when planning academic goals and have high regard for honest feedback. They should be self motivators and show a willingness to seek information from multiple sources. More importantly, mentees should feel comfortable seeking both personal and professional counsel.

The key to success: both parties are excellent listeners.
